ENGLISH CURRICULUM STATEMENT

At Yanco Agricultural High School, the study of English as a subject involves studying the use of language and its various textual forms, including, but not limited to, written, spoken and visual texts. These texts will vary in complexity and students will learn to decipher between different elements and techniques, reflecting on their own learning.

The NSW English Syllabus K – 10 states; “Language shapes our understanding of ourselves and our world. It is the primary means by which we relate to others and is central to the intellectual, social and emotional development of all students.” English lays the foundations for students’ learning in all subject areas and allows them to become confident learners.

STAGE 4 AND 5

Students develop their skills to respond to and compose texts, for communication, knowledge and enjoyment. They have the opportunity to engage with a wide range of texts including First Nations, Asian, literary classic and contemporary literature, to help develop their understanding of themselves and other cultures, through critical and imaginative analysis.

STAGE 6

Throughout their study of English in Stage 6, students are allowed the opportunity to continue the development of their capacity to understand and use the English language for a variety of purposes and in various textual forms. They do this through the study of a wide variety of texts that are acknowledged as quality literature of past and contemporary societies.

ENGLISH STANDARD

This course allows for students with a wide range of literacy skills to analyze, study and enjoy a variety of English texts. Through doing so, they become confident and effective communicators. Students engage in a variety related to reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing.

ENGLISH ADVANCED

Students continue to explore opportunities to investigate complex ideas in challenging texts, to employ a sophisticated use of language to create meaning and find enjoyment in literature.

Students refine their understanding between language, texts and meaning, through their skillful use and study of language forms and features, structures of texts composed for a range of purposes and in a range of contexts.

ENGLISH STUDIES

This course allows students the opportunity to become confident, competent and engaged communicators and to study through the study of a wide breadth of texts.

Through responding and composing students strengthen their ability to access and comprehend information from a range of sources for a variety of purposes.

ENGLISH EXTENSION

This course allows students who undertake Advanced English with the opportunity to extend their use of language and self-expression. This course is designed for students with an extensive interest in literature and a desire to pursue a specialized study of English.

The English Extension 2 course enables students who are accomplished to craft language and refine their personal voice in both critical and creative ways. They can master skills in the composition process to create a major work that extends the knowledge, understanding and skills developed throughout the Stage 6 English Courses.

 

In NSW, English is a Mandatory subject in the Stage 6 Curriculum.
